10 Questions, 10 Answers

If you're new to Erik Taylor Massage Therapy, or massage in general, this is a good place to start.  If you don't find what you're looking for, I'm happy to address your needs via phone or email, located here.

Where will my session take place?

Your session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room.  Soft music may be played to help you relax.  You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort

02

Must I be completely undressed?

No.

However, Swedish massage is traditionally practiced with the client unclothed, since undergarments tend to interfere with the long, flowing strokes.  MyoFascial Release sessions are given with the client dressed in a two-piece swimsuit (or shorts + sports bra) for women, or loose shorts for men.

Your comfort is of paramount importance to me, and I will gladly accommodate your preferences.  With the exception of MFR sessions, a full drape is employed throughout.

03

Will anybody be present when I disrobe?

No.  I will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet.  However, all minors will be accompanied by a parent or guardian while in the treatment room.

04

Will I be covered during my session?

Yes.  You will be properly draped with a clean sheet to keep you warm and comfortable.  Your dignity and modesty will be honored at all times; only the area being worked on will be exposed.

05

What parts of my body will be massaged?

You and I will discuss the desired outcome of the session.  This will determine which parts of your body will be emphasized.  A typical full body massage will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck and shoulders.  Abdominal work will be incorporated at your request, and I always  honor your preferences on areas to avoid.

You will not be touched on or near your genitals (male or female) or your breasts (female).

06

Will lubricant be used?

A light oil or lotion may be used to permit your muscles to be worked on without causing excessive friction to the skin.  The lubricants I use are hypo-allergenic and readily absorbed. Due to the heightened sense of smell possessed by the maternity set, and the possible contraindications, I do not use scented or essential oils. If you, however, have a favorite oil or lotion that you prefer, you're welcome to provide it.

07

How long will the session last?

That depends on the goal of your session.

The average full-body Swedish massage lasts approximately one hour.  But I don’t do average.  I take about an hour and a half for a Whole Body.  Less time spent means less areas covered, but that may be what you want or need.  A half hour is a good start for head and neck work, back, or legs and feet, but an hour allows for more thorough treatment.

I do ask that you be considerate to the clients following you and book an appropriate amount of time for the needs you have. I am very rarely able to extend a session in progress, although the focus can be shifted to accommodate emerging needs.

Although we spend a few minutes at the start of your session discussing the desired outcome of that day’s massage, you will receive your full booked session time on the table. Tardiness will limit this, however.

08

Will you come to my home?

I do a very limited amount of out-call work, in general. For most clients, the cost is prohibitive. That said, feel free to contact me with your needs and we can discuss your options.

09

What's with the wrinkled sheets?

While I make every effort to provide a high-end atmosphere for your enjoyment and relaxation, there are some concessions that I must make for the sake of the sensitivities of some clients and my (our) environmental impact.

Unlike most spas, I do my own laundry; both so I can monitor the chemicals used, and so I can keep costs (which I would ultimately pass along to you) down.  As a rule, I don't use fabric softeners or other additives when laundering, which help control wrinkles but can provoke rashes in those with sensitive skin.

Since every session starts with a freshly laundered set of sheets, there is a lot of wash to be done.  To minimize ETMT's environmental impact, loads are condensed as much as possible and still remain sanitary.  The trade-off, unfortunately, is a few wrinkles.  In truth, I probably notice it more than my clients; but if I haven't struck the right balance, or if you can teach me a better way, please let me know.

Just for the record, I use the same laundry soap for my sheets as I do for my baby's diapers.

 ...different loads, though.  ;^)

What do you mean? An African or European swallow?

Huh? I... I don't know that.
